Dental fillings

The purpose of a dental filling is to:

• Repair damage caused by a cavity
• Restore the shape and function of a fractured or otherwise damaged tooth

The most common materials for fillings are amalgam (grey fillings) and composite (white fillings). Grey-colour amalgam fillings are made from a metal alloy. Composite fillings are made from resin and are designed to match the colour of your teeth.

Both these materials have their advantages. Ask your dentist to help you choose which option is best for you!

Gum disease Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Typically, the gums become infected due to an accumulation of tartar and plaque. It starts with the gums becoming inflamed, but once the infection reaches the bone, it’s a full-blown periodontal disease. This condition attacks both the gums and the bone, weakening the tissues that support your teeth.

The most common symptoms are:

• Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
• Bad breath
• Red, sensitive or swollen gums
• Teeth that move, shift or fall out
